How it works

Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security + 2.9% Medicare) on 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at the 2026 wage base of $184,500, which is reduced by any W-2 wages. A 0.9% Additional Medicare tax applies above $200,000 ($250,000 joint, $125,000 separate).

Income tax is figured on your profit plus wages, minus half of your SE tax, minus the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single or separate, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household), using the 2026 IRS brackets.

Due dates for 2026 estimated payments: April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027.
