If you sell on Etsy or another online marketplace as a business, your profit is self-employment income. Marketplaces don't withhold tax, so once you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year, you're generally expected to make quarterly estimated payments.
Your tax is based on profit: sales minus the cost of materials, marketplace and payment fees, shipping, packaging, advertising and other business costs. Many sellers overestimate what they owe because they look at gross sales.
A marketplace or payment app must send you a Form 1099-K if your payments for goods total over $20,000 in more than 200 transactions. It may send one for less. The 1099-K shows gross payments, so you subtract refunds, fees and costs on your Schedule C. Whether or not you get one, all sales income must be reported. See 1099-NEC vs 1099-K.
On top of income tax you owe 15.3% self-employment tax on 92.35% of your net profit if net earnings are $400 or more.
